Tucson Official Work to Protect Pedestrians with New Crosswalks
At Breyer Law Offices, P.C., we were happy to learn about seven new high intensity activated crosswalk signals to be built this year and next in the city, according to a news report in the Casa Grande Dispatch. After 17 pedestrians were killed in 2011, and a 13-year-old boy this year, the Tucson task force has been created to improve safety by adding these crosswalks. The city will put in a crosswalk where the boy was killed first before beginning on the others.
Unfortunately, that area had been on the list to receive a crosswalk for at least six months before the boy was hit. A crosswalk at the intersection may have saved his life. The crosswalk lights will flash yellow, then turn to solid yellow, then finally turn to red to give pedestrians warnings as they cross.
Tucson Pedestrian Accident Statistics
There were 17 pedestrian deaths from Tucson car accidents in 2011, according to the city. There were more than 1,400 pedestrian accidents in Arizona in 2010, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). These accidents caused 155 deaths and 1,236 injuries. These incidents can result in serious injuries and death, as cars are very heavy objects that are often traveling at high rates of speed. When people are hit by cars, the results can be deadly.
Tucson Car Accident Tips
We want everyone to travel as safely as possible. Look for crosswalks, wait for crossing signals, and then still remain as aware of your surroundings as possible. Look for cars that aren’t stopping and avoid them. Make eye contact with drivers so you know they see you. Wait for everyone to stop before you begin crossing and then cross quickly. If you are a Tucson driver, always watch for pedestrians, even outside of crossing areas. Still, no matter how safe your actions are, accidents still do happen.
